About me

By nature I have a natural curiosity and creative mind, and photography provides me a channel to explore and capture images and memories that have been of significance in my life.  In my daily life, my profession as a researcher and manager in R&D, I get to create products and processes to improve our daily lives, and the accomplishment of this is recognized in our products and the multitude of inventions, and patents I have been fortunate to be part of.  Photography and travel complement my profession and provide a balance in my life.  I am fortunate to share my love for travel and photography, with my wife and 5 year old son, who are becoming good photographers.

Q&A

Why do you think your photo should win the Photo of the Year (POTY) Contest?
The image of a giraffe in the morning mist in Amboseli National Park in Kenya, epitomizes the beauty of nature and wildlife in it's most natural setting. This image inspires me to capture images of nature and share my love for nature through the medium of photography.

Who do you think is your biggest competitor?
I love the image of the parched earth and the boy with a water jar by Puranjit Gangopadhyay, winner of the POTM in Jan 2009.  This image evokes emotion of the plight of the drought, but there is hope the boy holds in his hand.

How long have you been a photographer?
I have been a photographer since my college days which is about 2 decades ago.  I started with a Fuji STX-2 manual SLR film camera.

What does photography mean to you?
Humans are visual creatures relying on what we see to learn and experience emotion.  Photography is a way for mankind to record and share what we view, what evokes emotion or passion, to express our creativity, and through this medium often invoke change. Photography is a passion for some, and a tool for others. Either way, it touches all our lives and shapes society.

What does your ideal day with a camera look like?
My ideal day with a camera would be spent in the Serengeti Plains tracking a cheetah family, and recording their life.  The nurturing of the young, the hunt for survival, the playful moments, a beautiful sunset, taking only images and leaving only footprints.

Why should the flock vote for your photo?
The flock should vote for my photo since it is an image of nature, in it's purest form, beautiful, fragile and in the risk of being wiped out from the face of the earth.  In it's natural setting images like this will be a rarity, and will only be talked about in future generations unless we act to preserve such places and be respectful stewards of the earth.  This image inspires myself and many others to undertake eco tourism, and bring to others the beauty of nature, while providing a path for conservation and coexistance.

Kunal's photos are awesome...they draw you in...the jaguars look like they are looking right through you, the giraffes look like they are moving languidly through the mist...they let you imagine...
