Critique: A pleasant mix of foreground, background and the subject

Vickky Idnaani is a young gun from Bombay who has earned much fame for his work in fashion photography. He is an ex-student from the reputed J.J. School of Arts. The photographer went through all the 384 member’s portfolios on Fotoflock.com and zeroed on this image. Just like in a competition there is a winner and runners up he has also commented on two other photographs by other members of the flock!

Out of the 384 member’s portfolios with multiple images on this website I particularly liked this image for its sheer simplicity. The colours in the picture are bright and the texture of the colour red is also smooth and appealing. The boy is wearing a white shirt with a red stain on it and the icing on the cake is the blue bucket next to the boy! The image has a pleasant mix of foreground, background and the subject and they all seem to follow the laws of aesthetics.

I have also been through the other images in his album and I noticed that he uses a lot of silhouettes. He can be a very good cinematographer in my opinion as all his images have a quality that is way beyond that of a still camera. He has taken efforts to capture the sky in certain images along with the silhouettes. The way he captures his images a certain motion or movement is seen.

On seeing this image I felt that the photographer has a great sense of location and he can be a great help in a production house in locating locations for shoots etc. He has captured this image very well. The colours are well presented and the wall in the image almost becomes the subject.  I felt a stronger subject was missing in the image. In fact I feel it would make a great backdrop for my style of fashion photography. If I were to use it as a backdrop I would make a lady in a lime green gown the subject.

I think this is a very powerful picture, but the photographer needs to create a subject around the car to make it a complete photograph. And I would just like to leave it at that and not add anything more and as for the subject I leave it to the readers’ imaginations.
