Coinciding with the World Photography Day, Symbiosis Society on Friday announced the launch of a school of photography to impart quality education to students about this form of art.
Talking to reporters, the principal director of Symbiosis Society, Vidya Yerawadekar, said that the school of photography has come up on its Lavale campus.
Ace photographer, Gautam Rajadhyaksha, who will also be the chair professor of the school, was present during the deliberations.
Rajadhyaksha said the school would offer three types of courses - a weekend course (2 days), a six-month certificate course in photography and a one-year advanced diploma in photography — to cater to different needs of the learners.
The fees for the weekend course would be about Rs.6,000 per head, while the fee for the other two courses would range between Rs1.5 lakh and Rs 2.5 lakh.
Renowned photographer Shirish Karrale, who has been the photo editor of about 27 magazines in the past, will head the department and will be assisted by another noted photographer, Rajeev Joshi.
The school will have state-of-the-art technology for teaching the students. There would be two studios and a floor for carrying out photo shoots.
Photography workshops will be held to equip the students with basic understanding of photography and camera, and to generate an interest in photography for advanced studies.
The workshops will focus on basic understanding about history of photography, optics and principles of photography, digital and scope of photography, besides practical handling of a camera.
The certificate course will give a detailed understanding of all that is taught in the weekend course, while the diploma programme will have two semesters along with practical experience in specialisation related to the discipline and commercial photography.
The advent of digital technology has had the biggest impact in the Art, Science and Business of photography after the invention of color films.
Digital cameras, labs, storage devices, digital manipulation software, etc. have completely and dramatically changed the photography business as the world has known since it began. This synergy between the old and contemporary, results in great images. The impact of visual communication is seen by the innumerable images we see every day in our environment. Photographers are often at the forefront as they document history and social changes.
The resources of these image makers are tapped by virtually all industries and very few people will be unaffected by photographic image capture, in its varied usages and application. The contemporary formally trained image maker is not only a respected self employed professional but also a very well paid artist.
The average monthly salary for photographers in India would be from Rs.7,500/- to Rs.45,000/- and the average professional fee charged by a self employed professional is Rs. 10,000/- to Rs.50,000/- plus per day.
