Learning to take inspiration from life

Sid VasandaniSid Vasandani, at the age of only 30, has already carved a niche for himself as a fashion photographer and, that too, a very good one. Even a quick look at his photographs confirms that. He has photographed for magazine covers including Femina, Asian Photography and more. Read what Fotoflock.com found out about the man behind the camera.

How did photography happen to you?
Photography was something I always wanted to do and I planned my career accordingly.
After acquiring a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) degree with specialisation in photography from Rajasthan School of Arts, Jaipur, I worked for two years in ad agencies including Lowe Lintas, before finally taking up photography as a profession in 2004.

What is it that inspires you?
Till sometime back I was inspired by all the imagery by various legendary international photographers from the past to the present, Hollywood movies and Music Videos from the early nineties. But now I'm learning to take inspiration from life itself.

What keeps you going?
A hope to create some innovative work someday.

What are your future plans?
Sid VasandaniI'm taking a break for 2-5 years during which I will be doing a course at the British Institute of Professional Photography, and will also be travelling extensively.

What are you up to currently?
Getting ready to leave on the 25th.

What are your other passions and hobbies?
Music and movies. I love playing my guitar and some PC games as well.

What equipment are you using currently?
I use a Mamiya67 camera with a Phaseone digital back, and a 35mm Nikon digital SLR.

Qualifications?
I am a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) with specialisation in photography from the Rajasthan School of Arts, Jaipur. I worked for two years in ad agencies including Lowe Lintas, before finally taking up photography as a profession in 2004.. I also won second place last year at the International Photography Awards (IPA2007) in the special effects category. In 2006 I won an Abby and an AAAI for the tortoise campaign I shot for Everest.

Sid VasandaniWhat do you like to shoot?
Mostly fashion and beauty are my first preferences, but I also love shooting anything creative.

When you say you like to make photos that sell, what do you mean by
that?

Being a professional commercial photographer is a huge responsibility towards the client you photograph for. No one pays me to take a pretty picture. They will only pay me if the picture I create will help them sell the idea or product that they are selling.
