Dilip Bhatia, an alumnus of the Brooks Institute of Photography, has freelanced for all the top advertising agencies in India and shot the very best from the Indian film industry over the last 17 years. He has several awards to his name which includes being listed among the top ten finalists in the editorial category of Hasselblad’s prestigious “Master of Photography 2009” award and the top honours in the Institutional category of the Communication Arts photography competition.
How old were you when you first picked up a camera?
I was 27 years ‘young’ when I first took to photography.
What inspired you to take up photography as a career?
The sheer joy I got from being behind the camera led me to take up photography as a career.
You are an alumnus of the Brooks Institute of Photography. How big a role did this play in shaping your photography career?
I learnt my A, B, C of photography there and I am what I am today because of that solid foundation.

How did you get the opportunity to work for Hugh Hefner when you were first starting out?
After topping my school, I was offered an internship at Playboy. It started from there as I got the offer to work there after completing my internship.
Being among the top ten finalists motivated me to try and shoot even better pictures.
Are your shoots spontaneous or do you like to plan them to perfection?
I guess they are a mix of the two. Advertising shoots are more planned while my personal ones are more spontaneous.
Which genre of photography do you enjoy the most? Why?
I enjoy all genres of photography. I love taking pictures irrespective of what is in front of my camera.

You have been shooting for over 15 years now. Which has been your most memorable shoot so far?
There are just too many to point out a single one. If you ask me, very shoot of mine has a memory. But I am very sentimental about my first shoot with the legend of Bollywood, Shri Amitabh Bachchan.

Who has influenced you the most in your photography career?
I have been influenced by many, but emotionally my brother Kumar has inspired me the most.
You have shot almost every top star from the Bollywood industry. Was there anyone in particular you loved shooting the most? If yes, why so?
I have loved shooting Mr. Amitabh Bachchan, Salman Khan and Akshay Kumar, all for different reasons. They made for a memorable shoot because of their professionalism and cooperation.
Quality in a print is everything, even more so when you are printing Black and White. It makes or breaks a picture!
Your work has taken you all across the globe. What is your favourite location for a shoot?
The Maldives, Ladakh and South Africa are among my most favourite locations for a shoot.
What prompted you to start your own studio or did you always intend to do so?
It was my goal to start my own studio, once I decided to become a professional photographer.

What are your thoughts on the increasing use of post-production in photography?
I think all is fair, as long as you don’t overdo it and do it aesthetically.

Quality in a print is everything, even more so when you are printing Black and White. It makes or breaks a picture!
